Bible verses for athletes to help you reach new heights

As an athlete, you’re expected to stay in top physical and mental shape to perform your best. God can help with both of those aspects. Here are some of the best Bible verses for athletes.

Bible verses for athletes

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.

This proverb reminds athletes to keep trusting God. Your sports journey is going to take many twists and turns. You could have an injury, get benched or have a bad game.

In moments like these, it’s easy to lose faith in God. However, it’s times like these that God is challenging us even more to dig deep with in ourselves.

Remember, God is always with us. He’s guiding us down the right path, and the more we trust Him, the better we’ll perform.

Ephesians 5:20

Always give thanks to God the father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Have you ever heard the phrase: all glory to God? If so, then you’re familiar with thanking God for your daily blessings. Hard work pays off.

So too does gratitude. When we have moments to celebrate in our athletic careers, we must not forget to credit out creator, God.

He gives us the strength to perform at high levels. He’s with us when we hit the game-winning shot. Instead of taking credit for our own hard work, it goes further to thank God first.

Joshua 1:9

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

Think of Joshua 1:9 when you need an extra boost mid game or when you’re training. The stronger and more courageous you are, the more likely you are to win games.

Sometimes, we find ourselves with less talent than the opposition. In these times, don’t be afraid. Remember, God wants us to stand up to our challenges.

If we’re worrying about a tough matchup, God wants us to know He’s with us wherever we go. Instead of worrying, trust in His plan for you.

1 Corinthians 9:24

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.

When we’re competing, there’s only going to be one winner. There will also be one loser. 1 Corinthians 9:24 inspires us to run faster, harder and more determined than the person next to us.

It reminds us that we must compete to be the best version of ourself on and off the court. When we ‘run’ in such a way to get the prize, it means we put ourself in the best position to win.

Despite on the field talent, sometimes this means taking care of our mind, body and soul off the pitch too.

1 Timothy 4:8

For while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.

This bible verse for athletes reminds us that no matter how hard we lift and train, having godly values is even more important.

We simply cannot reach our peak performance if we’re living lives full of sin outside the arena too.

When we’re aligned with God spiritually, our performance will reach its full potential.
