29 Oct Daily Bible Verse: Instant vs. Delayed Gratification October 2022
Good day to all. Here at New Faith Academy we do a daily Bible verse series to attempt to navigate all the challenges of the modern world. Today’s daily Bible verse is from the book of proverbs.
Every time the season changes and the weather starts to get cooler or warmer, we notice differences in our lives. It may be new business ventures, friendships or relationships. Whatever enters our lives is a blessing from God, even if it isn’t always clear.
Clarity is something that I find myself seeking a lot. I ask myself questions like “why did this happen” or “what will happen if I do that?” Each form of those questions is me trying to account for everything and plan for the unforeseen.
But in the process of doing so, I miss what really matters most: the journey. As a society we are so accustomed to getting instant feedback, whether it’s ‘likes’ on an Instagram post or ‘retweets’ on a tweet. We always want to see right away what people think of us.
This is simply unsustainable. Think of our ancestors, who didn’t have social media or cell phones. They had to be more present by nature because they weren’t always endlessly consuming things. Yes, I am victim of romanticizing times, naturally thinking that they were better compared to the modern day.
But it’s just another reminder for me to focus on God’s wisdom. And to trust that he has a purpose for each one of us. It won’t always be clear. It shouldn’t have to be! I need to trust each day that my small actions will eventually lead to greater successes.
If this post has resonated with you in anyway, you might find the excerpt from my latest book: The Daily Proverbs: 365 Devotional Sayings on How to Live a Better Life.
Daily Bible Verse: Instant vs. Delayed Gratification
Proverbs 8:34 “Joyful are those who listen to me (wisdom), watching for me daily at my gates, waiting for me outside my home!”
True and lasting joy in this life is not to be found in temporary and fleeting pleasures. These things are to be found in God and God alone. His wisdom transforms our lives, allowing us to see the world through His perspective. Then we can live in freedom, resting in His peace, joy, and love. Remember the teaching of instant gratification versus long-term satisfaction. The quick sensation of pleasure will pale in comparison to a hard-fought endeavor. Eating junk food is a great example of this. It will feel good as soon as we eat it. But a few hours later we’ll feel greasy and bloated. Eating healthy doesn’t give us the same “high” as junk food but will leave us feeling proud of our decision to live a healthy life.
